Kensington Team Captures Lake Orion Youth Baseball League Title! Coached by John O'Connor, Jeff Blackburn, Josh Anderson from KCC and other fine men, the boys enjoyed a thrilling 6-4 victory over Baldwin Barber Shop in the final game, showing excellent pitching, hitting and defense, capped by two rally-squashing double plays in the last two innings.

Community Garden News Report!

(Jun 15 - OAKLAND TWP - by Therese Wittry) Many things to report today. Only 4 more rows to plant this week - 1 row of tomatoes, 3 rows of green peppers. If anyone wants to plant during the day let me know. Thanks to everyone who helped get things planted this week. When you come out you will find the following crops have sprouted: corn, pumpkin, zucchini, yellow squash, spaghetti squash, green beans, peas, cucumbers, spinach, tomatoes, and green peppers. We give thanks for the nice rain on our new plants yesterday evening! Click on this link to view photos of the garden!

A row all the way around the garden has been cleared. The weeds around all the trees have been cut down to eliminate small animal hiding places. 10 mounds at the west side of the garden have been marked with stakes. These mounds have watermelon and cantaloupe seed planted. There is grass clippings available for spreading, they are located on the north-west side by the newly mowed area.

All plants have been sprayed with liquid fence. Another animal control tactic is to save dog when brushing your pets or human hair when cutting. We have spread some along the back of the garden. Noise makers will begin being assembled this week.

Many visitors have been stopping by to check things out! It is exciting to share our vision. It is neat to see people's faces light up with ideas as to how they can help.

Summer Serve - Garden Day Saturday June, 20th - the road side of the garden has been mowed for the tent and in preparation for the water barrel installations and shed building.

The week ahead:

Planting - 1 row of tomatoes, 3 rows of green peppers to be planted.
Weeding - the rows can be hoed, or weeded by hand. Be very careful about 6 inches on either side of the string watching for the new sprouts.
Grass clippings - new clippings are available to be spread from this weekends mowing. They are located on the north-west side by the newly mowed area. There is a wheel barrow out there.

Summer Serve - Garden Day Saturday June, 20th - the road side of the garden has been mowed for the tent and in preparation for the water barrel installations and shed building. We need about 10 more barrels to be collected this week. Anyone available to assist with cleaning barrels for this weekend please let me or Tom Englin know. Anyone interest in assisting with kid project set up for Saturday, please let me know.

Rock collecting - our pile is getting much smaller. We need to continue to pull rocks out of the garden. The rocks are being traded for water. As the weather warms up, water will be essential for our crops.

Supplies Needed this week:

10 more 55 gal barrels
Donations for liquid fence purchase
Pressure sprayer - for applying liquid fence
Skids - for rain barrels
Cinder blocks - for shed foundation
Hoses - 100 - 150 ft for watering (need at least 10)
Newspaper - lining the rows to keep weeds down
Grass Clippings - lining the rows to keep weeds down
Stakes - wood and metal, 2ft to 6ft - for marking rows, staking plants or hanging animal control scarecrows
Containers - for collecting rock, weeds, harvesting or carrying water
Noisy Stuff - CDs, pie pans, pop cans - for animal control
Irish Spring Soap - for animal control

What a fabulous start to a wonderful initiative to grow an authentic Community Garden together – providing tons of food for those in need, while working along side others for a purpose and significance greater than we can ever imagine!

Much work has already resulted in giving our fine vegetable harvest-to-be the following look – A snap shot of the current status of each item planted, the layout on the property and of course the date which we expect to receive some of the fruits of our labor, through the blessings of our creator!

"Orion Idol" is taking over LOHS Atrium, from 10:30-11:00 am every Sunday in March. With the winner receiving a 16GB iPOD Touch, you will want to start preparing your 30-second acapella song now! To participate, just sign up in the Atrium anytime after 9:00 am this Sunday.

BREAKAWAY 6th, 7th,and 8th graders kick off a new teaching series "M&M" (there may be chocolate involved) starting this Sunday, March 8th, 9:30 am in the Atrium of LOHS. Grab a friend and look for Troy Grabel, Breakaway's master of stories.

High Schoolers, mating season is upon us and you're invited to come talk about "sex" throughout the month of March with our EDGE Sunday night program for 9th-12th graders. Meet LO Edge Leader, Clay Shuman and ride the bus from LOHS to Troy campus each Sunday night from 6:00-9:00 pm; More info available at kensingtonchurch.org/students

Warm smiles, tasty snacks and full hearts prevailed over the chilly weather at Kensington Lake Orion this weekend! Over 1000 of you bravely made your way over to the high school to enjoy the Grand Opening Weekend of our 5th Kensington Campus. Highlights included the fun and challenging service message from Dave Wilson, topped off by an invitation and closing song anthem to make a difference for God in our lives, starting now! In the Atrium we met neighbors, friends and family while sampling the celebration cake, fresh baked giant cookies, warm bagels and hot beverages for all. Add in a little live bluegrass from the Paint Creek Boys, floor hockey & ping-pong games for the youths and colorful ballons everywhere ... a wonderful party to launch Kensington in our community.

During the service we were challenged to have MORE Impact by loving God and Others. Why not take the challenge and open our bibles this week, or invite someone who is outside God's family to join us for the Superbowl service next weekend, or stick a toe in the water with a First Serve on any of our volunteer teams (click here to see opportunities available). Or, chose to love God by honoring Him with your approach to financial matters - Sign Up Here to Participate in an FPU Group in Your Area! Q. If I enjoyed the experience, what’s my next step?

A. Come back again next Sunday .... We will begin a brand new series "Old School" - Is there a place for the rituals and traditions of historic Christianity?" Featuring informative and inspiring messages from Teaching Pastors Dave Wilson, Steve Andrews and others. Bring a friend to check it out, they'll also enjoy the great music, video clips and other special surprises that we are planning for both services: 9.30 & 11am at Lake Orion High School.

Q. How can I get a little more connected?

A. Directly after a service next weekend, you can stop by the Welcome Center and pick up our "Next Steps" pamphlet for plenty of easy suggestions. While you’re in the lobby, check out the Atrium area – there’s always something fun happening! Three easy ways to get started are…

1. Take a 5-minute tour of the Lake Orion campus. Stop by the Welcome Center in the lobby before/after the service for details.

2. Come meet a neighbor or connect with friends in the Atrium and enjoy our Breakfast Bar, open between services from 10:30-11:00am.

3. Stop by our Resource Center and pick up a book, music or message CD to learn more, get inspired or keep growing.

Q. What’s the best way to "plug in?"

A. Over 200 serving opportunities are being created by launching this campus. Volunteers are needed in every area, including guest relations, setup & teardown, Kensington Kids, tech team, security and more. If you can tell a story, play guitar or drive a truck, we need you. If you can hold a baby, hang a sign or just share a smile, there’s a place for you to plug in and make a difference.

Q. What’s happening for high-school students?

A. Kensington’s high-school program ("edge") has regular gatherings throughout the month. Check out the Crazy Edge Website. On Sunday morning during the services, all high-school students are invited to sit down front on the left side and enjoy the service together. Contact Clay Shuman for more info.

Q. What’s shaking for middle-school students?

A. Our "breakaway" students will have their own campus gathering every week on Sundays during the first service (9:30-10:30am). To get there, meet breakaway leader Troy Grabel in the Atrium area.

Q. What do you have for adults?

A. Three ways to meet others and grow spiritually are…

1. Check out small-group and large-group options for "Financial Peace University" at our lobby table.

2. Starting February 8, check out our "New and Married" class which meets from 9:30-10:30am on site Sunday mornings at Kensington Lake Orion. Drop-in or contact Melissa beforehand: Melissa.Borglin@KensingtonChurch.org

3. Fill out a connection card at the Welcome Center and join one of our many serving teams.

Q. Can I really have coffee in the auditorium?

A. Yup! We’re casual – please feel free to bring your coffee or drink into the auditorium. Bring your own or grab a Starbucks cup, available at the onsite Coffee stations. Sorry, enjoy the food selections in the Atrium area only.

What's The Latest? Can You Help?

Glad you asked! There have been several exciting things happening recently as we've continued to bring the news of the Lake Orion Campus launch to everyone at Kensington and in the surrounding community. Many familiar faces were seen at the big football game at Ford Field last week, both on and off the field ... what a fabulous season for the Dragon team! Congratulations to Coach Bell and all the players, families and students that were able to be part of the excitement! Can't wait to hear more of the "behind the scene stories" and to see what happens in 2009!

At the Rochester Hills Campus the past few weekends, we've continued to talk up the need for more of you to get involved at the new Lake Orion location. Some of you just need to consider making it part of your Sunday routine so that we can free up more seats for newcomers at RH and many of you are perhaps still thinking about volunteering to help out. With this new location opening, we have a need to fill over 150 different serving slots, and if you think you'd like to get in the game with us just take a moment to send an email to lakeorion@kensingtonchurch.org, with the subject "Got Game!". For a list of all key positions still available check out Lake Orion Volunteer Central where you can get plugged into a team for connection and training before your first serving assignment next month. We'd love to have you join us ...

Excitement is building around Kensington as we are working hard on all of the grand preparations for this year's fantastic Christmas At Kensington production. We need some help with a big need - building and assembling the Christmas sets for the service! Meet us this Saturday at 10am at the Kensington warehouse facility in Troy. The warehouse is located at 1258 Rochester Rd. - just south of Maple. It’s behind Michigan Timber & Truss (big white building with green lettering). It takes quite a bit of effort to construct the scenery and staging for 4 different campuses, so we could really use your help ... and bring a friend too ;-)

Finally, perhaps you've heard that Kensington Lake Orion will be having a float in this years' Orion Area Holiday Lighted Parade this weekend! We have a really cool entry that will feature a hunting themed float, and we need participants to ride and walk along the parade route to help us announce the new campus opening up, and to hand out invites to the Christmas services at Rochester Hills. If you are interested, get out your best hunting outfit and gear (camouflage, orange glow, etc) and meet us at 4pm on Saturday in the staging area of the parade starting point (see 2008 Parade Route Map). The parade starts there at 6pm and we'll finish in the Kroger parking lot on Lapeer, so you may want to park your car there beforehand. Live & Rockin' On-site !!

The Lake Orion Campus received great promotion today at Kensington, creating even more anticipation and excitement for our upcoming opening Sunday on Jan. 11, 2009. Dave Wilson told us that when the North Campus opened in 2003 at Adams HS, the Highlander's football team went the entire way and won the State Championship that year!! This year, the incredible Lake Orion Dragons are playing in the Div. 1 footbal finals at Ford Field, and we fully expect history to repeat itself!! Congratulations to all of those current and future Kensington families that are Lake Orion fans and/or have players on the team. What a great way to start off a new campus at a new location ... and it gives Dave more opportunities to tell football stories well after the Lions season is over ;-).

On Sunday morning, many members of the future Lake Orion Campus Set-up Team showed up early at the RH Campus to get some initial experience in their future assignments by "shadowing" the existing team there. It was wonderful to see all of the smiling faces and red shirts, and the matching bright red hair of young Andrew Poulus, there with his Father, working hard with the rest of the energetic crew of men and women.

We were so thankful to have many additional families sign up to serve at Lake Orion, people who will be coming to the campus from Ortonville, Oxford and all around the Orion area. What's next? We hope to see you at the Thanksgiving Eve services at the Rochester Hills Campus this Wednesday night - check out the plan for the evening by opening the Nov. 26th listing on the upcoming events page: Thanksgiving Eve At Kensington. Then, why not take some time to write out a list of friends, family and neighbors that you are thinking about inviting to Christmas at Kensington this year. Post it on your refrigerator and start praying for them (you'll be surprised). The FREE Tickets for all services and all locations will be available starting Wednesday afternoon (11/26), just go to kensingtonchurch.org and reserve as many as you intend to use!
